Friday morning was cloudy and cool. A contractor who once served on the North Carolina transportation board was sentenced to prison in Raleigh Thursday on highway bid-rigging charges. W Ted Phillips of Robbinsville, president of Phillips and Jordan Inc. was sentenced in Federal court to serve 60 days and his company was fined $250,000. Harmon Field has received some new playground equipment. Chairman C. M Eargle stated Friday that they nave six swings in one set and in another set there will be two swings, a monkey bar and two rings; also two complete sets of see-saws. Mr. Eargle said that more equipment will be installed as money becomes available. The minimum benefit for Social Security recipients now receiving it could be eliminated as of Feb. 1 under an agreement reached Thursday by House and Senate conferees. In a black-bordered, front page story, the Washington Star re^ ported its own death Thursday after 128 years of newspapering. Continued On Back Page Museum Closed During August The Polk County Historical Association announces that the Museum in the Tryon Depot will be closed during the month of August. The Museum will be open still on July 28 and 30th, as it is all other months. Tuesdays and Thursdays 10 to 12 noon. It contains a steadily growing collection of artifacts, maps, photographs, farm implements, etc. connected with the history of Polk County. Residents of the area have been most generous in donating objects of special interest in the collection of Polk County memorabilia. Curator of the Museum is Dr. Joseph C. Placak who is in attendance during visiting hours, assisted by a loyal staff of volunteers. President of the Association is Mrs. Norme D. Frost, and she and Dr. Placak will be on call to open the Museum during August if special requests from visitors arise. Numbers to call during August are: 894-8827 or 859-9250. Tryon Lions Meet Tuesday The Tryon Lions Club will meet Tuesday at 7 p m. at the Pacolet River Plantation. Mr. and Mrs. James Bodie, who attended the Lions International Convention in Phoenix, Arizonia, will tell about their trip. Tryon Football Physicials Tuesday Anyone interested in playing football at Tryon, grades 7 through 12, will take physicals on Tuesday, July 28th at 7 p.m. at the office of Dr. A. T Pagter on Wilderness Road. Before taking the physical, forms must be obtained at the Tryon High School and completed by a parent. Captains practice will begin on Monday, July 27 at the field house. Regular football practice will begin on Monday, August 3rd at6p.m. Democratic Women Meet Tonight The Democratic Women of Polk County will meet tonight at 8 o’clock at the courthouse in Columbus. Covered Dish For Melvin Hill Community Watch The Melvin Hill Community Watch citizens will have a covered dish supper Thursday, July 30th at 6 p.m. at the Melvin Hill Church of the Brethren. Miss Kristine Hanson and friend, Gary Gantt, of Nashville, Tenn are visiting Miss Hanson’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. John E. Hanson in Green Creek. Swicegood Is Kiwanis Speaker The Tryon Kiwanis Club will meet Tuesday at 12:45 p.m. at the Pacolet River Plantation. Henry A. Swicegood, Administrator of St. Luke’s Hospital, will be the guest speaker. A native of North Carolina, he is a graduate of UNC at Chapel Hill, and earned his Master of Science in Hospital Administration at Northwestern University. He has served as Administrator Assistant at University Hospital and Hillman Clinics, Birmingham, Ala.; Assistant Administrator of Providence Memorial Hospital in El Paso, Texas; acting General Administrator of the University of Texas Medical Branch Hospitals, Galveston, Texas; director of Foster G. McGraw Hospital of Loyola University, Maywood, Ill.; administrator of Santa Theresa Community Hospital, San Jose, Calif.; assistant Vice Pres., and Eastern Regional Administrator for American Medical International, Inc., operating out of Atlanta; Area Director of Carolinas Hospital and Health Services, Inc., Charlotte; Regional Administrator of Southern Health Services, Inc., Atlanta. He is married to the former Shirley Waters, a graduate of UNC with a degree in pharmacy. Their two children attend the University of Georgia Robert McClain is in charge of the program.
